NBCOT Question: MET Levels

A client with a history of cardiac disease had a MI 6 weeks ago. He can currently work 2 miles a day with no ill effect. He mentioned to his OT his fear of sexual activity and fears death or injury to the heart during sexual activity. Can you reassure your client that his stamina is adequate in terms of MET levels for sexual expression?

No, refer to primary physician
No, a brisk walk or climbing is not adequate enough in terms of MET levels for sexual activity
Yes, sexual activity is relaxing

Hello. Thank you so much for the questions/answers you posted. I graduated from OT school years ago, took the exam 3 times and STILL didn't pass it. I was going to just put OT away for good but I can't. I'm going to try it AGAIN but I gotta try new studying strategies. Anyway, thanks again for this.

p.s. Do you have any advice on what techniques I need to try? I obviously don't test well.

Hi, I am in a masters program currently and will be graduating in Dec 2010. I have been studying for the exan for about 6 months now along with my regular studies.

I am terrified of coming this far, and then failing the test. I heard they recently changed the test format and it may be much harder.

Are there any tips on passing from someone who has recently taken the test.

And what is the most amount of times people have taken it and failed it?

I would gor for yes, sexual activity is relaxing. Sexual activity is a concern both for patients with
coronary artery disease and physicians taking care
of these patients. Sexual counselling is an important
component of treatment for post-myocardial infarction
patients. Therefore, it is essential for the cardiologist to
understand the physiological and haemodynamic
changes that occur during sexual intercourse. Anyways, i would also suggest a little bit of Cognitive therapy to help improve the process.
Very interesting info and useful!
Nice blog,
Jules

Hi! I'm new to this blog. I've read some of the comments and questions and at some point, it boosts my interest again in OT. I graduated 2004 and its been a while. I'm already licensed in the Philippines and took NBCOT 2x. I'm scared to do it the third time, I'm worried sick that I might (AGAIN) fail the exam. But, I'll try again maybe this year.

I would say refer to a doc, since walking 2 mph is not an indicator that he is at the proper met level for sexual activity but walking 3 mph is.

I would answer no he cannot choice 2. He seems to be between MET level 2-3 and sexual activity is at a 5-6 MET level as per physician recommendation.

From the studies I have seen, they have suggested that sexual intercourse is experienced at differing MET levels for patients. Where did it say that sexual intercourse was at a 5-6? Is there a link I can look at because I was very curious about this...? However, generally if a patient is at a 2-3, they are still at the point where they are able to shower in warm water and stand for brief periods of time....so I would not recommend sex yet to play it on the safer side. I would consult with a doctor and find out their recommendations for appropriate MET levels for sexual intercourse. Maybe they recommend it at 5-6 because that is playing it on the safer side?
